Even though sharks may be the most feared animal on the planet, humans are far more dangerous than any other animal on earth. We kill approximately 56 billion animals every year, excluding marine life. Sharks are hunted for their fins to make fin soup. We kill many animals for food but do we kill any other into the brink of extinction? It is predicted that whitetip reef sharks and gray reef sharks will never be seen again in 20 years. A study published last year in the journal Marine Policy attempted to calculate the number of sharks killed per year. Researchers concluded that between 100 and 273 million sharks are killed. To make it easier to wrap your head around, they also concluded that 11,417 sharks are killed per hour compared to the 12 people killed by sharks per year. The only other predators of sharks are other sharks and killer whales.
